We grow a giant onion "exibition" through seedlings

The onion variety called "Exibition" is striking not only in size, but also in taste. The pulp is so sweet that the onion can be eaten like an apple. Forget streams of tears when slicing lettuce and unpleasant onion bitterness. On average, the weight of one "turnip" ranges from 200 to 500 g, but sometimes the bulb reaches a weight of 800-1000 g. Growing Dutch onions is not a difficult task, however, requiring a competent approach.

Most experienced gardeners advise planting mature seedlings in the ground. This is the surest way to grow huge, succulent bulbs. In warm regions, sowing seeds in open ground is practiced. Seeds must be prepared in advance for planting. Growing through seeds is much easier and less time consuming. But if you dream of getting a kilogram onion out of the ground, you need to spend a lot of time and effort preparing seedlings.

The necessary conditions

The Exibishen variety cannot be classified as a very demanding plant. But he needs to provide certain conditions after planting, cultivation requires adherence to a certain technology. From the moment of planting in open ground to harvest, at least 80 days must pass. It takes about 2 months for the seedlings to develop. Usually seeds for seedlings are sown at the beginning of March, and a full harvest is harvested in August.

To grow onion "excision" you need:

• prepare fertile soil (you can buy a ready-made mixture at a seed store);
• purchase quality seeds (they are sold only in specialized stores);
• observe the required temperature, ensure watering and feeding of growing seedlings;
• plant plants on time, observing a certain technology;
• carry out a set of agronomic measures to stimulate plant development.

It is better to plant "Exibishen" in a special soil mixture, which is sold in agricultural stores. You can prepare the ground yourself. To do this, you need sand, turf soil, and humus. The soil and sand must be passed through a sieve. Mix the ingredients in the following proportion: 1 part humus, 1 part earth and 2 parts sand. Some gardeners recommend calcining the mixture before sowing the seeds. This procedure is optional for onions.

Landing

Planting seedlings is an important step in the entire growing process. The date when you need to plant the seeds depends solely on the climatic conditions in the region. In warm conditions, seedlings can be planted in early or mid-February. If a cold climate prevails, it is better to postpone the planting to March.

Advice

The seeds need to be disinfected. This is easy to do with potassium permanganate. Prepare a weak solution (light pink), soak the seeds for a few minutes.

Growing is best done in improvised mini-greenhouses (sealed containers with transparent walls). For this, food containers or any transparent container with a lid are suitable. Make small depressions (up to 1 cm) in the soil. Planting is carried out in moist, warm soil (the optimum temperature is 20 degrees). After about 7 days (sometimes earlier), the first shoots appear. Until this moment, you do not need to water the soil.

Growing process

The exibition bow needs a lot of daylight. Average daylight hours in mid-spring are 9-10 hours. A bow needs at least 12 hours of continuous lighting. This can only be achieved with a fluorescent lamp.

It is important to consider 3 aspects.

1. Profitability. Considering the fact that the lamp will burn continuously for several hours in a row, it is better to purchase energy-saving bulbs. In agricultural shops special lamps are presented that correctly distribute light for growing seedlings. They have proven themselves well among gardeners. Confused only by slightly overpriced.
2. Duration. It is important that the light is on for a long time and does not turn off after a couple of hours.
3. Adjustment. It is important to be able to adjust the height of the lamp in order to properly set the distance to the bow boxes.

Feeding onions should only be done if the plant looks lethargic and develops too slowly. In agricultural shops you can purchase a special complex fertilizer for onion root feeding.

Preparing for landing

Before planting in the ground, you can add a solution of potassium nitrate to the soil. This is done 2 months later, 10 days before planting in the garden. Dissolve saltpeter in a ratio of 1 g to 1 liter of water. During this period, it is important to start temper plantsso that the "resettlement" in the open ground was less noticeable.

10-14 days before planting, boxes with seedlings must be taken out to the balcony for a couple of hours. The temperature on the balcony should not be lower than 15 degrees. Every day you need to increase the period of stay in the fresh air. Three days before planting, you need to leave the exibition bow for the night on the balcony with the windows open.

Landing

As soon as the time comes, when night frosts are excluded, onions can be planted in the ground. Greenhouse planting is done a little earlier. Don't wait until it gets too hot outside. Exibichen does not like high temperatures. Observe the distance between the bulbs - 30 cm. They will grow quickly and can interfere with the proper development of the "neighbors". The depth of the hole is up to 3 cm.

There is no fertile black soil in Holland. Vegetable crops are grown on poor soils. For this type of onion, you can use sandy soil. Loosen and water abundantly before planting. Select only the healthiest bulbs. It is better to discard diseased plants. The first top dressing should be applied correctly no earlier than 3 weeks after planting.

Growing requires compliance with certain rules:

• ensuring regular watering (use warm water);
• weed removal;
• pest protection;
• introduction of complex fertilizers.
