Description and features

Subulate bryozoan is a perennial cushion plant native to Western Europe. This ground cover crop belongs to the Clove family and is considered to be something between grass and moss. The grassy carpet has another name - Irish moss.

The height of the soft garden cover is no more than 8 cm, the narrow bright green leaves have an unusual needle-like shape, the stems are flexible. From about the end of May to the end of September, small, no more than 0.5 cm, white flowers appear. They exude a pleasant honey aroma; at the end of flowering, small capsules form in place of the inflorescences - fruits with seeds.

In the wild, bryozoans are most often found on rocky hills and sandy plains. The plant is found almost everywhere in Europe and East Asia. In landscape design, grass is used for landscaping lawns and slopes, filling the space between slabs in garden paths, creating popular rocky compositions - rockeries.

  • Rare watering of bryozoans. The exceptions are especially dry periods, when absolutely all plants should be additionally moistened.
  • A grassy carpet is not afraid of physical influences - you can sit, lie, walk and run on it, the cover will not seem trampled, but, on the contrary, will become dense.

  • It quickly covers the soil - its ability to grow will help hide damage in the lawn soon without additional growing of seedlings and replanting them.

In the months of flowering of the styloid plant, the lawn is decorated with thousands of small white dots, which delights the eye and enlivens the local area, and a honey aroma is heard from the bryozoan flowers.

How to grow grass from seeds

Irish moss seeds can be sown directly into the soil or seedlings at home first. The entire planting process is best done during the spring months.

  1. The seeds of the plant should be purchased - they are small and light.
  2. Prepare a container - most often the planting material is planted in wooden boxes.
  3. At the bottom of the prepared container, lay sandy-peat soil, fertile and well moistened.
  4. Pre-soak the seeds in water, make shallow grooves in the ground and lay them.

Important!

The planting material should not be abundantly sprinkled with earth, it is advisable to cover it a little with soil. So the first shoots of bryozoan will not keep themselves waiting long.

After the planting procedure, the boxes must be covered with plastic wrap and not removed until shoots appear. Place the container in a bright room with an air temperature not exceeding 18-22 ° С.

After about a week, green sprouts will appear in the container, after two - small bunches of young styloid grass. When the plant grows strong, it can be transplanted into separate pots. It is advisable to move moss into open ground in May. The distance between the beams should be 5-10 cm.

For planting, it is worth choosing a place where the grass will not be waterlogged. Therefore, the ideal soil option is loam with a sufficient sand content.

Care rules

Bryozoan, like any plant, needs proper care.

  • Temperature

The ground cover grass tolerates frost well, but it is recommended to cover it at very low temperatures. In the summer months, during a period of extreme heat, the bryozoan should also be protected from overheating with spunbond - a special white non-woven material.

  • Humidity level

High humidity is not required to grow a grassy carpet. The main thing is to additionally irrigate the plants during especially dry periods, in the absence of natural irrigation by rains.

  • Watering

An important aspect of Irish moss care is watering. In the first weeks after transplanting seedlings into open ground to a permanent place, it is important to moisturize them every day. So still immature seedlings will receive all the necessary nutrients.

After the seedlings in the garden get stronger and grow a little, watering should be reduced. The procedure should be carried out 2-3 times a week, even in very hot weather. Otherwise, decay of the rhizome and leaves is possible. For watering bryozoans, it is better to resort to bottom watering technology.

  • Priming

Sandy and loamy soil is ideal for growing subulate moss. If you do not want to further fill the site with a plant, you can pour a layer of gravel.

As you can see, following the rules for caring for a grassy carpet is not difficult. If you follow all the recommendations, the flowering grass will delight with its unusual appearance and honey aroma.

Fertilizing culture

An important procedure for obtaining a healthy green cover is grass feeding. The essence of such care is the saturation of the plant with minerals.

In the spring during planting, it is necessary to "feed" the seedlings with nitrogen fertilizers, in the summer, during flowering, with substances based on potassium or phosphorus. Autumn feeding of moss in the garden is carried out again with nitrogen compounds.

Bryozoan is an unpretentious plant that is ideal for landscaping on a personal plot. Unpretentious blooming moss pleases gardeners with soft needle-like leaves, small flowers and a pleasant honey aroma. A subulate grass covers the plains with a green carpet, lies in beautiful pillow-like islands in rocky gardens, and grows on the paths between the slabs on the land near the house.

Both experienced and novice gardeners can grow Irish moss from seeds. It is easy to breed and requires little maintenance. The main thing is to follow all the recommendations for cultivating a plant on the site.
